Italy Has Banned OpenAI’s Language Model, ChatGPT Over Privacy Concerns

Italy’s Data Protection Authority has banned ChatGPT over suspected breach of privacy rules and has launched probe over collection of personal data and its inability to verify user’s age.

OpenAI has taken ChatGPT offline in Italy on Friday, 31st March 2023 after Italy’s Government Data Protection Authority banned the ChatGPT and launched a probe over the suspected breach of privacy rules.

It states that ChatGPT has been storing and using massive collection of personal data to train AI system.

OpenAI has 20 days to respond over all breach incidents or may have to pay fine of upto 20 million eurs ($21.68 million).

In response to the probe, OpenAI has stated that it will remainc ommitted to advancing the field of AI and developing responsible and beneficial technologies.

The organization has expressed its willingness to work with governments and other stakeholders to address concerns and find solutions that balance the benefits of AI with the need for accountability and transparency.

OpenAI has mentioned that they have taken several steps to promote ethical and responsible AI development and has established a set of guiding principles that prioritize safety, transparency and social benefit.

OpenAI has also partnered with other organizations to promote responsible AI development. For example, it has joined forces with Microsoft, IBM, Google, and other tech giants to form the Partnership on AI, a consortium that aims to develop best practices and standards for AI development and deployment.
